Craft Project: Simple No-Sew Dog Bed

Dog beds are fairly expensive to buy. And they are not very easy to wash. You can make your own dog bed using blankets or other items you already have in your home. Or you can go out and buy some special blankets to make your dog bed. No matter what you use, this simple dog bed is quick and easy to make. And it’s also easy to wash so you can keep your dog bed clean and free from fleas.

First you need to find a cover for your dog bed. You can use a blanket, a sheet, a vinyl tablecloth or shower curtain (some dogs love the feel of cool vinyl), a comforter, or for smaller dogs you can use an old sweater, an old bath towel or beach towel, a soft robe or whatever else you can think of!

You will also need something to stuff the dog bed with. Remember, you want this dog bed to be easy to wash, so although your first thought may be to stuff the dog bed with a pillow or poly-fil, a pillow may not fit in your washing machine and poly-fil would need to be enclosed in a casing to be washed. So think of other things you can use to stuff your dog bed. You can use old towels, old socks, any scrap fabric, an old blanket, old soft clothes. You can also use things like scrunched up newspaper (some dogs love the noise and feel of a newspaper bed) or packing peanuts. If you use something like newspaper or packing peanuts for stuffing the dog bed you can just toss it out and add stuffing when you wash the bed.

Make your dog bed by laying the cover out on the floor then putting the stuffing in the center of the cover. Spread the stuffing out to create the size bed you want. If you are using a blanket for the stuffing, just fold it over and over again until you get a square the size you want. Once you have your stuffing on the cover, simply fold the cover over and secure it with large safety pins. You just made a dog bed!

Try making dog beds in odd shapes. You can stuff a sweater in the shape of a sweater and just pin the openings shut. Dogs absolutely love to lay on something they think is taboo and if they find a slightly stuff sweater on the floor they will likely run to it and claim it as their new bed!

Another odd shape you can make for your dog is a life size doll or even a dog shape. You can read my article titled [How to Make a Life-Size Doll Pillow] and you can either stick with the traditional doll shape or you can use the tips in the article and make a bed that is shaped like a dog!
